A Preview of the 2006 Texas Rangers

2005 Overview:

Buck Showalter's 2005 Rangers ended up the season with a disappointing 79-83 record despite having one of the better lineups in baseball.  What made the 2005 season particularly disappointing was the fact the 2004 team ended the season with 89 wins and one of the most impressive home records in baseball. In 2004, the Rangers won 51 home games which ranked 4th overall in the American League, while in 2005 Texas managed only to win 44, ending the season 16 games behind the AL West Angels.

Texas fielded one of the best offensive infields in 2005. 1st baseman Mark Teixeira (.301 43 144) continued to develop his swing, playing in all of the Rangers 162 games in 2005. 2nd baseman Alfonso Soriano (.268 36 104) also proved durable playing in 156 games by finishing 2nd on the team in HRs behind Teixeria. Shortstop Michael Young (.334 24 91), 3rd baseman Hank Blalock (.263 25 92) and outfielders David Dellucci (.251 29 65) and Kevin Mench (.264 25 73) also helped to contribute runs to the potent offensive lineup.

Starting pitcher Kenny Rogers (14-8 3.46) slipped from his 18 wins in 2004 posting a 14 win season to led all starters. Youngster Chris Young (12-7 4.34 showed promise in 2005 appearing in 31 games, while newly acquired starter Chan Ho Park (8-5 5.66) managed to post an 8-3 record before being traded to the Padres in August. Closer Francisco Cordero (3-1 3.39 37 saves) anchored the relief pitching while pitching an impressive 2-0 2.59 with 17 saves after the All Star break.

Off Season Moves:

The Rangers had a busy off season losing Rogers via free agency and trading Soriano in a 4-player deal with the Washington Nationals.  Texas also picked up Vicente Padilla (9-12 4.71) from the Phillies in exchange for RHP Ricardo Rodriguez. Soriano was sent to the Nationals for Brad Wilkerson (.248 11 57) while Texas also acquired free agent pitcher Kevin Millwood (9-11 2.86). The Rangers also completed a 6-player deal with the Padres which netted relief pitcher Akinori Otsuka (2-8 3.59) and starter Adam Eaton (11-5 4.57). Pitcher John Wasdin (3-2 4.28) was also resigned via free agency.

2006 Analysis:

New pitching coach Mark Connor has an arsenal of new arms to improve upon the team's 4.97 ERA in 2005. Texas continues to lack any "ace" as Rogers departure will prove difficult to replace. Millwood is a nice acquisition as is Padilla, although both posted sub-500 seasons in 2005. Eaton should fit nicely into the rotation and is a reliable arm. Look for Otsuka to stabilize the bullpen. Retaining the services of relief pitcher John Wasdin was also a wise move. The Rangers will certainly miss Soriano's bat in the lineup and hope Brad Wilkerson can return to his 2004 form when he was able to hit 32 HRS - before the Nationals changed their location to Washington. There are many new faces on the Rangers roster, but a lack of quality starters most likely will land them in the same position as 2005.

Where is A good place to sell baseball cards?

I have about 30,000 baseball cards mostly from the 1980's sitting in a closet collecting dust. I would love to get rid of them and was wondering if anyone had any suggestions on where I can go to sell the cards for a reasonable value.

Your best bet is ebay by far...of course to be honest with you baseball cards from the 80s aren't really worth much at all. They were mega-mass produced, and no one wants them.

Some Bad Things About Soccer

Soccer riots have always been something of A mystery. The violence in hockey is at least compatible. Grown men in heavy costumes skating at high speed with blades on their feet to create enough tension and energy to start a fight in a hurry. In baseball, a hard leather ball thrown 100 km / h and the head can make understandable that you want to charge the mound. But football? Even the game is going at a slow pace and hardly inspires more focused concentration on the field itself. Commentators American jokingly portray the reason for soccer riots as his low score low key. They often say "after paying nearly $ 100 for seats and the fight against the crowds to see two teams play a match while an end in a tie 0-0, you can riot." However, for the rest of the world, soccer riots are no laughing matter.

People are dying

Death of football riots occur in the world. They were recorded in Germany, England, Greece, Spain, South Africa, Italy and Latin America. In 2001, a riot of football in Ghana has killed 138 people. While it is in our human nature to have a visceral response and succumb to the mob mentality that any fan would be killed simply by watching a football match tragedy is at its peak. All sports have to players and fans more noble and more a part of the tapestry of humanity. Loss of life to a soccer game really shows how what we have reduced our ability to connect with another.

Politics enter

What distinguishes football in many other sports is its international reputation. Soccer is not a property of any one country, people or race, but is an international phenomenon, which encompasses a variety of people, ideas and landscapes. Given the great diversity of participants in the game, world politics often play an unfortunate part in soccer riots. When countries become enemies or evoke different political positions residents often leave the soccer team to play their frustration. This creates an energy in anger and the false good sport to violence in the stands. A riot at a soccer game between Iran and Japan said to be motivated by protesters fed up with Iran sex rights violence. The riots broke out in left three dead. In 2004, a soccer riot in Rome is scheduled to protest against government spending on education and sport. When the tension in the world invades the field of sport, everybody loses.

Antisocial behavior

Unfortunately, football seems unable to get rid of its reputation as a riot adventure. It attracts enthusiasts who want to be part of the crowd mentality and creates an atmosphere of anti-social and anti-authority behavior. The number one accident of any football riot is usually the police or the authorities who came to maintain order in and around the stadium. Gangs of youths who call themselves "football hooligans" have voluntarily begun to infiltrate the world of football to disseminate their own brand of antiauthoritarian violence.

The model Olympic sports competitions put forward only when individuals and teams to the best of their ability to society as a whole is a nourished and inspired by their progress. Soccer riots has the opposite effect on the sport as a whole and disadvantages of the common good.

Dealing With Dissent In A Decent Manner

Earlier this week, an interesting precedent was set in soccer. And it didn't happen in the big money spinning leagues of Europe, it look place in Australia's A-League.

On the weekend, Brazilian player Fabiano, who plays for Melbourne Victory was sent off in disgrace for spitting at another player. And rightly so. Such action is not tolerable in society, let alone on the soccer pitch.

However, it's what happened in the days following the game which set a new precedent. Following his sending off, Fabiano was made to face the league tribunal and at the end of the hearing, he was suspended for a total of 9 weeks. 8 weeks for spitting plus the mandatory 1 week for the red card.

9 weeks for spitting! And given the shortness of the A-League, it basically means that he misses nearly half the season. Not to mention, he'd just arrived in Australia to ply his trade here.

But it was justified. It was also time to take a stance on such despicable acts of dissent. There is no justification possible for spitting at someone else in a tolerant, well-educated society. Unless, we're living in the stone ages or in warfare (which we are not), such acts cannot be tolerated.

This ruling serves as a lesson to not just Fabiano, but to other young players, especially those from Generation Y who have big egos and think they can dominate the world overnight. I wrote about this in a previous article in relation to Cristiano Ronaldo ("Cristiano Ronaldo: Victim or culprit?")

However, some soccer critics do not agree with the harshness of the ban handed down to Fabiano. One of them, Jesse Fink, from the The World Game, thinks that it is harshly excessive in comparison with the bans handed down for tackles in rugby league.

But he shouldn't be making comparisons with a completely different sport whose problems with dangerous tackles is a constant presence and whose levels of tolerance for such offences are very high. What he fails to understand is that the level of respect and conduct required by a soccer player is different from other sports, hence rendering any comparison meaningless and misguided.

Soccer must be played in the right spirit with the right attitude. It is imperative that authorities are able to control the actions of players that could bring the game into disrepute and damage the image of the game worldwide. For this reason, the A-League tribunal and Australian soccer bosses should be congratulated for being brave enough to stand up to such acts and punishing them accordingly.
