2006 New York Yankees Preview

2005 Overview:

The New York Yankees simply weren't themselves for much of the 2005 season. The Bombers starting pitching proved spotty for much of the year while their offense regularly scratched and clawed for runs during the entire first half of the season. Newly acquired starter Randy Johnson struggled to become the power pitcher the Yankees had hoped for, while the rest of the pitching staff battled with constant injuries and poor starts. Somehow Manager Joe Torre was able to keep his team in the mix of things until after the All Star break. And as the Orioles and blue Jays began slumping in the second half of the season, the Yankees hit their stride.

Rookie 2nd baseman Robinson Cano (.297 14 62) provided the Yankees with an impressive bat and steady defense while 3rd baseman Alex Rodriquez (.321 48 130) assembled A stellar MVP campaign hitting behind Shortstop and Captain Derek Jeter (.309 19 70). Outfielders Hideki Matsui (.305 23 116) and Gary Sheffield (.291 34 123) also helped anchor the Yankee offense while 1st basemen Jason Giambi (.271 32 87 108 walks) rebounded from his admission of steroid use and a dreadful 2004 campaign. Giambi turned in an impressive offensive second half and forced fan favorite Tino Martinez (.241 17 49) to the bench despite Tino's hot offensive production prior to the all star break.

Closer Mariano Riveria (7-4 1.38) proved once again why he is one of the most valuable closers in baseball appearing in 71 games while saving 43. And Randy Johnson (17-8 3.79 211K) finally settled in to provide some needed consistency in the rotation. The Yankees also caught some much needed "lightening in a bottle" from newcomers Aaron Small (10-0 3.20) and Chien-Ming Wang (8-5 4.02) while starting pitcher Mike Mussina was able to string together a number of quality starts in order to improve his overall record to 13-8. The July addition of Shawn Chacon (7-3 2.85) acquired from the Colorado Rookies for RHP Ramon Ramirez and Eduardo Sierra also provided some much needed help for the starting rotation.

The Yanks ended their season in a classic "fight to the finish" battling rival Boston for first place finally clinching the AL Eastern division in the final weekend series against the Red Sox.

The Yankees postseason didn't prove quite as exciting as they lost to the Angels in 5 games exiting quickly in the first round of the playoffs.

Off Season Moves:

After a disappointing postseason, Steinbrenner and company quickly re-signed GM Brian Cashman and began focusing on the tasks at hand. First in line was extending leftfielder Hideki Matsui's contract for another four years. Next, Yankee management added bullpen strength by signing free agents Kyle Farnsworth (1-1 2.19 16 saves) and Mike Myers (3-1 3.13) while trading for pitcher Ron Villone (5-5 4.08).

Yankee fans were also given a special Christmas present on December 21st when Boston free agent outfielder Johnny Damon (.316 10 75) agreed to terms as the Yankees new centerfielder. Free agents Octavio Dotel and Miguel Cairo were also signed while fan favorite Bernie Williams (.249 12 64) agreed to return - at least for one more season - as the team's DH.

2006 Analysis:

The Yankees addressed some key bullpen concerns with additions of Farnsworth and Myers who will join Tanyon Sturtze (5-3 4.73), Aaron Small and Chien-Ming Wang as the bridge to Riveria. Dotel is coming off surgery but his save numbers (36 in 2004) have the Yankees hoping he is worth a chance. Damon finally gives the Yankees the leadoff hitter they have lacked for the past few seasons and will solve the defensive problems that eventually forced the benching of centerfield Bernie Williams prior to the all star break.

If both are healthy, Randy Johnson and Mike Mussina should have an easier first half then last season but the 4th and 5th starters for the Yankees may need some help - so expect Jaret Wright and Carl Pavano to receive some competition. It will be interesting to see just how Joe Torre fits Chacon, Wang and Small into the mix.

San Diego Personal Trainer's Holistic Approach for Treatment of Painful Medical Epicondylitis

Medial Epicondylitis is an often debilitating condition, that personal fitness trainers can expect to see when training clients, especially men. Medial epicondylitis (ME) is A tendon injury acquired from perpetual overuse of the forearm flexor muscles especially when gripping heavily a bar or a weight. The result is a severe ache or burning sensation to the medial or inside aspect of the elbow joint or humerus. Often the pain becomes so excruciating that resting the elbows on a padded surface like a preacher bench can be very painful.The tendinosis that occurs is a direct result of failure of the damaged tendon to heal due to perpetual abuse. As President and medical exercise specialist of Somagenesis Health and Fitness in San Diego, I am constantly confronted with male clients, who experience intermittent bouts of medial epicondylitis from doing too much too soon. It is imperative that the fitness specialist have a basic understanding of the sign and symptoms of epicondylitis.

Cause of Medial Epicondylitis are:

Repetitive use of flexor-pronator muscle at the medial epicondyle.
Can be related to the individuals occupation, if the job required repetitive movements such as hammering, screwing or lifting.
Can be the result of an acute injury or accident.
Excessive grip tension, a bad golf swing, poor throwing or swinging action as in baseball or tennis.

Conventional Treatment Choices:

In my opinion, the more holistic the treatment, the better. If you chance it, and choose see an orthopedic surgeon, be prepared to have a radiography of the elbow to rule out lesions or avulsions of bony material. It all about generating extra income into the hospitals and clinics. Following the interpretation of the film by the Radiologist, the Orthopedist will usually prescribe a non-steroidal or steroidal anti inflammatory pill or injection. Although this reduces the inflammatory aspect of the injury, it will retard the healing process of the soft and tendinous tissue. In addition NSAIDS and steroids can affect other body systems. Why take a chance?

Holistic Treatment Choices:

Treatment should begin with the application of ice to the elbow 3-4 times per day the quiet down the heat and inflammatory response. Remember calor or heat, impedes the body’s healing process.

Begin muscle/tendon reconditioning program. This begins with gradual stretching of the flexor-pronator muscles. Be gentle or risk re-injury. This should be performed 12 times to warm up the muscles and increase flexibility before engaging in strength training or other activities

Begin strengthening program. Start with isometric exercise and then transition to eccentric strength movements. Forearm flexion and extension movements should be emphasized. Be sure to gradually increase the work load or resistance. If a relapse occurs then cut back on the offending exercises.
Always ice at least 5 to 10 minutes following the exercise, to quiet down the cell and flare.

If you exhibit pain during normal activities of daily living, that back off on your rehab for 48 hours. Be smart and know when to call it quits with conventional rehab systems. There may be a more serious underlying medical situation such as a bone spur, complete tendon rupture or broken bone. If this is the suspected case then be sure to contact your physician for further medical evaluation.

In summary, most cases mild to moderate cases of medial or lateral epicondylitis are very manageable orthopedic anomalies. The best treatment is simply doing the least invasive therapy, versus medicine or surgery. A Sign of Maturing - Trade Shows Sans Booth Babes

The rationale behind hiring a trade show model is simple - nail the first impression by leveraging the old advertising maxim of sex selling. And for years the trade show model was a staple, pulling show-going crowds towards booths and hopefully towards products. Recently, though, trade show models, or as they are more commonly known "booth babes," have been going the way of the caribou. Case-in-point, the 2008 SHOT Show, previously known for its pairing of guns and babes, was so lacking in trade show models that Field and Stream Magazine was forced to pad their annual review of models with pictures of men sporting unusually long beards, and causing many readers to question, why are exhibitors messing with a good thing?

In 2006, the Electronic Software Association (ESA), the trade group behind the Electronic Entertainment Expo (E3) issued a press release stating that for the first time, the dress code, typically flouted by models, would be enforced. And by "enforced" the ESA meant a warning followed by a $5000 fine. Common motives associated with this new rule enforcement stemmed from the reputation of the trade show (previously described by IGN's David Adams as "ribald"), the fear that the ESA was marketing sexually-explicit content to children, and the fact that the video game industry was reaching sales parity with Hollywood. There is, of course, a common thread between these arguments: the product didn't need the sex, instead it needed to be viewed as professional. For the ESA, the video game had matured beyond the quick, impulsive sell that sex grants, and was finally a legitimate part of living rooms around the world.

The ESA was telling exhibitors to do something every trade show exhibitor should be doing anyways, they should be considering their brand. Whether you are an entrepreneur, an executive, or merely an employee, trade shows are worked with the explicit intent of drawing quality attention to your brand. The trade show exhibitor is there to build excitement that should ultimately turn a booth visitor into a repeat customer. The booth is a means to forging a lasting relationship on a personal basis. Working a booth allows a company to press the flesh and promote with a passion that simply can't be found in traditional advertising. So, why would a company risk potentially isolating half the attendees at a conference with a booth babe?

Half? Well, close to it. According to a survey conducted by AffiliateTip.com, 70% of the female respondents and 41% of the male respondents (56% overall) said that they were less likely to visit a booth that used a booth babe. Conversely, 29% of the overall respondents said that a booth babe caused a null opinion, and a mere 15% said that a booth babe would positively impact their opinion of a booth. Perusing blogs will lead to an even larger mountain of anecdotal evidence that suggests that not only are individuals less likely to visit your trade show displays if a booth babe is present, but they are actually more likely to form a negative opinion of your company to boot.

Of course, not all trade shows are following the trend presented by the ESA, yet booth babes seem to be disappearing just the same. The use of booth babes at YAPC (Yet Another Perl Convention) sparked a thread on the Use Perl official message board regarding whether or not booth babes should be used at other conference. The quote that seemed to sum the experience up was "that is so auto show."

The debate surrounding the use of booth babes even leaves the trade show, with various media outlets debating about whether they should continue to feature photos of the "best" babes, often opening up the discussion to readers. Tom's Hardware, a forum and media outlet focusing on technology posed the question to their readership and the first response cut to the heart of the issue - juxtaposing the 'for' being juvenile and mainstream against the 'opposed' being adult and technical. Tech Republic, also opened the question up to their readers, and gathered likewise responses. It seemed that even the media was turning their backs on booth babes.

There is, of course, one final theory on why exhibitors were shying away from trade show models. At the 2006 E3, Disney was there presenting the video game tie in for their Pixar animated feature "Cars." There between near-life-size examples of the film's star cars was, you guessed it, a trade show model. The model in question was decked out from head to toe in skintight black jumpsuit, complete with plunging neckline and a checkered-flag racking stripe running up her sides, and covering just enough to show that Disney could play by the new E3 rules. Perhaps the world at large saw Disney's display as truly jumping the shark and everyone simply moved on.

Whichever theory you subscribe to - maintaining an professional image, fear of isolating potential clients, or merely staying one step ahead of Disney, the use of trade show models are certainly on the decline. And as John Davis, editorial director for Ziff Davis Media Game Group told ABC News, "Not having the booth babes isn't going to make any difference." Instead, of babes, the new trend seems to be presenting your products in a professional manner, with booth workers who go beyond gimmick or sex and instead have a passion for your brand and a knowledge base to match. Guess which one leads to more quality sales?
