The city of Regina is planning A party - complete with a winter carnival, entertainment and fireworks - to greet the Olympic flame to the community in January.
Organizers displayed plans for the Jan. Nine event in front of excited kids arrayed in sports jerseys, interspersed with the odd fairy, witch and dragon, at Ruth M. Buck faculty on friday morning.
Callie Morris, an 18-year-old varsity of Regina student, will carry torch the last three hundred metres to the stage before lighting the community cauldron in the January show at the Fieldhouse.
'This is sort of a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity that I'm very grateful for. I'm just excited and can't bear to wait to carry the torch,' she said. As Morris, a hockey and baseball player and wrestler, held a torch in her hands from the 2006 Winter Olympics in Turin, she was surprised by its weight. But she's's even more thrilled by the possibility of being able to hold onto the Vancouver Olympic Games torch she'll carry that day.
Paddler Kia Byers, Regina's own Olympic upbeat, recalled watching the 1998 Nagano Olympic Games on TV as a 10-year-old and seeing the proud Canadian winners. Byers, who competed this year with Team Canada in canoeing at the international championships, declared those Canadian sportsmen provoked her. 'I would like you to dream big,' she informed the scholars gathered before leading them in a cheer.
'When I see the excitement in their faces and when they are cheering and hollering for Team Canada, it's actually great as it reminds me how I felt when I was that young and what originally brought the Olympic spirit into my dreams,' Byers told reporters.
'The torch relay is a way for every voter to become a part of the Olympic spirit,' she said.
The Olympic flame arrived in Canada Fri. to begin its 45,000-kilometre, 106-day trek to Vancouver, when the Olympic Cauldron will be lit Feb. Twelve, 2010.
Sporting red Olympic mittens, Mayor Pat Fiacco and Coun. Mike O'Donnell, chair of the Regina host council for the torch relay, inspired the students and their families to take in the Jan. 9'fun-filled' activities which will run from 4 to nine p.m. Plans include sports displays with members of the Riders and Pats available ; a winter carnival with ice sculptures, snow games, and lantern procession ; cultural entertainment ; and a concluding 10-minute fireworks display. Venues include the Fieldhouse and Evraz Place.
The torch relay will see a new torchbearer every three hundred metres. Organizers don't release details about the route until closer to the event for security reasons. There'll be non-permanent road closures along the relay route.

There has been A lot of talk about how California Redwood makes the better wood sign board. Some sign people even suggest they only use "Clear All Heart" Redwood, most of which is old growth. Well, I'm sorry, I don't care how well managed or thoughtful - old growth Redwood forests are NOT a sustainable resource. These same folks will often suggest that Redwood takes and holds paint better than Cedar - that Western Red Cedar doesn't even come close. I'm afraid these folks have it all backwards!
First of all it is important to say that Western Red Cedar and California Redwood are really from the same genus (an organism's taxonomic hierarchy e.g. species, genus, family, order, class etc.) and have a lot of similarities. The biggest difference is that Western Red Cedar has much greater structural integrity for two fundamental reasons. Firstly, Western Red Cedar has far greater flexural strength (the ability to flex without shattering or splintering) than California Redwood. Hydro-electric poles are often made of Western Red Cedar rather than California Redwood because vibrations in the environment around the dam would cause California Redwood to crack. Secondly, California Redwood greater density than Western Red Cedar and it also contains more oils. For these reasons; Redwood is more difficult to glue, does not retain stains and paints well, and splits when screws fasten Redwood together.
Speaking of oils, Western Red Cedar also contains natural oils. Cedar's unique aroma comes from naturally occurring thujaplicins in its heartwood. These compounds resist moisture and are toxic to decay-causing fungi and insects and preserve the wood against decay to give it long lasting appeal. Properly finished with natural water-repellent preservative and refreshed, Western Red Cedar will deliver decades of trouble-free service. The hallmark characteristic of Western Red Cedar, its profound natural durability, has preserved examples of native cultures for more than 200 years.
Western Red Cedar's lower density enhances its insulation value and makes it an easy wood to transport and handle. It's also more stable dimensionally. Western Red Cedar is hygroscopic so it absorbs or releases moisture and maintains equilibrium with the atmosphere. It shrinks very little and is superior to all other coniferous woods in its resistance to warping, twisting, and checking. It is Western Red Cedar's exceptional dimensional stability that makes it so well for use in high moisture areas.
Western Red Cedar is light-weight, achieves fine joinery, accepts finishes with ease and possesses outstanding dimensional stability and legendary durability. Western Red Cedar is the superior wood for nearly all purposes where attractive appearance and resistance to weather is important. Cedar Rocks!
